Puppetry and Animation in Inclusive Education

Course Summary

This course is intended for teachers and professional associates of pre-primary, primary and secondary schools, principals and other school staff who want to know more about puppetry and animation and how to use those topics in inclusive education.

The course consists of three parts:

1. Animation theory, types of stop animation – introduction; 2. Designing storyboards, making puppets and backgrounds and 3. Recording a short stop animation

Bringing inanimate things to life, "breathing life" into something, giving it a soul - that's what animation is all about. The word itself comes from the Latin anima (soul). Animation is a technique that creates the appearance of motion in still images or objects.  With the rapid change of still images in a series, our brains do not see a series of individual images, but rather it seems to us that the images "come to life," and that's how the effect of animation is created.

Since animation is a very broad field that takes a lot of time, the goal of this course is to introduce and encourage you to explore the magical world of stop animation on your own.
In the introductory part of the workshop, participants will learn about some types of animation as well as the stages of creation of stop animation. In the practical part of the workshop, participants will make their own paper puppets with moving limbs as well as backgrounds for shooting stop animation.

A part of this course is dedicated to inclusion and methods teachers can use in work students with special needs. The main part of the workshop will consist of producing a short stop animation.

Course Detailed Description

The stop animation or stop motion technique in the educational process offers great opportunities for everyone involved in the process. By actively participating in the animation creation process, children and students get the opportunity to learn: the mechanism of film creation, how to use mobile devices, methods of photography, how to create a composition, how to choose the appropriate shooting angle. They develop digital skills, think and reflect, research, experiment with different scene solutions and shooting methods. Interdisciplinarity, thematic connections as well as constant concentration when dealing with small details develop focus and attention. Good will, inner motivation, patience and time to engage in this kind of playful process are certainly important. That is why this technique is a powerful tool for inclusion.

The use of stop animation in the educational process encourages the use of modern technology, mobile devices and applications, but there is still a particular emphasis on encouraging and developing manual skills. Creating storyboards, making puppets, backgrounds, characters and animating all the objects created definitely requires the use of hands. Stop animation requires a combination of many areas: drawing, painting, use of ICT, communication.

Creating objects for animation allows students to work, design, evaluate, plan, use their skills and develop the above-mentioned skills themselves. It is also an exercise in visual perception.

Students can do stop animation in a group, in pairs or individually. With stop animation it is possible to cover almost all interests, allowing each participant to express their personality. The public screening of the finished films is an opportunity for the participants to share what they have learned and to show others what they have learned. In this way, the exchange of ideas is encouraged.

In summary, creating stop animation is an interdisciplinary activity that combines illustration, design, research, communication and presentation with modern technologies.

The main goal of this course is to get familiar with animation and stop motion teaching strategies, and tools to include students with less opportunities into the process.

  • get to know more about stop motion methods understand the basics of animation and stop animation techniques

  • get acquainted with inclusion methods within regular lessons 

  • understand the pedagogical approach to learning 

  • be aware of different views and perceptions in teaching 

  • learn how to use adequate digital tools as support in multimedia education 

  • enhance collaboration and networking  

  • create multimedia content  

  • analyse and evaluate the Course project
